Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
