Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
